Our work experience program offers a unique and inclusive opportunity for high school students and graduates with disabilities to gain valuable skills and experience in a supportive environment. The program focuses on providing students with practical work experience and skill development within a small but thriving cafe setting, and where there is interest, students may also choose to participate in our Storytime Program.
The social enterprise cafe and adjacent playground serve as an ideal setting for this work experience program. With its welcoming atmosphere and inclusive environment, it fosters a sense of belonging and acceptance for students with disabilities. Our staff are treated like family, and together we are dedicated to creating a supportive and understanding workplace culture, where all employees and volunteers are encouraged to embrace diversity and celebrate the unique contributions of each individual.
Throughout the program, students receive ongoing guidance and support from staff members who are experienced in working with individuals with disabilities. The staff are valuable mentors and are committed to helping the students navigate their tasks, develop new skills, and overcome any challenges they may encounter. By having this dedicated support system, students can feel confident and empowered as they embark on their work experience journey. At the conclusion of the placement, each student is awarded a certificate of completion.
Ultimately, our work experience program aims to provide a transformative experience that goes beyond mere job training. It seeks to instill a sense of independence, self-worth, and purpose in each student, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to pursue their future career aspirations. Our priority is to ensure that all students have the opportunity to thrive and showcase their abilities, helping to break down barriers and create a more inclusive society for all.
We have been operating the program over the last 10 years. During that time we have welcomed many students from a variety of schools and disability employment service providers. We are flexible in the working arrangements and have supported students on a weekly basis for a term, or on a daily basis for a full week within the term. It’s really up to the student and provider to choose what would work the best.
One of the key aspects of our work experience program is the set task list that each student works through during their time, whether this be working in the cafe or supporting the Storytime Program. The task list is carefully designed to cater to the abilities and interests of each student, ensuring that they can actively participate, contribute, and learn. By working on tasks such as taking orders, preparing food and beverages, serving customers, reading to children, or preparing craft, students develop essential vocational skills that can boost their confidence and future employability.
Our cafe opens early (to catch the early caffeine cravers) and closes just after lunch. It is a small environment with outdoor seating, includes access to a locked storage room, and amenities are on site and shared with the adjacent Livvi’s Place playground. Customers range across all ages, backgrounds, and social and professional networks, from young families to local tradies, sporting groups, neighbours and everything in between.
