What We Do

The Foundation’s dream to give children healthier and happier lives is being realised through two key initiatives:

1.Vascular Birthmarks Research and Support

This is enabling Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick to become a centre of global expertise in the area of Vascular Birthmarks (the area of disease that Olivia died from). Our focus is providing families access to information, access to support networks and medical experts and maybe, even one day, a cure. With a commitment by the Foundation of $450,000 over 3 years, a Fellowship was established in 2009 and will most definitely help save lives; and

2. Livvi’s Place Playgrounds (All abilities playgrounds)

The Foundation is working with local councils, communities and corporations to upgrade or build playgrounds to an “all abilities” standard, giving children regardless of ability the opportunity to play together, side by side.  These playgrounds will be called “Livvi’s Place”.

The first “Livvi’s Place” was opened at Timbrell Park, NSW in 2009 and a number of additional playgrounds are under development.

"Once every few years a project comes along that catches our imagination as something that is worthy of special attention because of the uniqueness or importance as a community facility. This playground is just such a facility."

Why We Do It

Whilst the catalyst for the Foundation was the experience John and Justine Perkins had during the time their baby daughter, Olivia, was in hospital, there is an amazing amount of evidence that cries out for us to create a world for healthier and happier kids.

Did you know that:

  • 24% of Australian children are obese
  • 62% of Australian families have both parents working
  • Australians have experienced a 45% increase in high density living over the last 20 years
  • 25% + of Australian kids spend 4+ hrs per day in front of TV
  • NSW has the lowest spend per capita on parks and playgrounds
  • Heart disease is now one of the leading causes of death in 4-14 year olds

The statistics above, if allowed to continue without the appropriate support and facilities needed, equate to an horrific outcome – that this generation of children will have a shorter life span than their parents.  This would be a first in the history of mankind!

Touched by Olivia is committed to ensuring that this does not eventuate.  Recognising that every dollar spent on a child in their early years is worth up to $14 in their later years, our Foundation is committed to generating funds to invest in our children before it becomes either too late or too expensive.
