Friday 24 June, 2011: Local Councillor of Morningside Ward, Shayne Sutton and John Perkins of Touched by Olivia Foundation officially open the first Queensland’s playground in the award winning Livvi’s Place network today at Hawthorne Park, Brisbane. Over 1,000 local residents came to test the new play facility out.
Spearheaded by the Touched by Olivia Foundation, ‘Livvi’s Place’ embraces inclusive play design, providing children and parents with a disability, a safer and more inclusive playground.
“Touched by Olivia’s goal is to make every playground in Australia an inclusive playground, just like Livvi’s Place,” said John Perkins, Founding Director of the Touched by Olivia Foundation.
The cutting edge playground has become a central hub for families in the community, offering a range of facilities including a bike track, BBQ and picnic area, encouraging Australian kids to embrace the great outdoors.
“Childhood obesity is one of the biggest health issues facing our nation. One if four children everyday spend over four hours watching TV. Livvi’s Place will hopefully encourage more Australian children to get moving,” added John.
The ground breaking playgrounds offer a snapshot of what we should expect in all playgrounds in the next decade. Touched by Olivia are focused on providing playgrounds where children, regardless of their abilities, play side by side.
“We recently opened a Livvi’s Place playground in Dubbo and it has been a huge success. At our flagship playground in Five Dock, the usage has increased by 1000% *from 150 visitors a week to over 1500. We are delighted to be able to include this as part of our endorsed network, and are particularly pleased that the Morningside community now has a facility that will allow people of all ability to play side by side,” said John.
There are over 20 playgrounds in Brisbane, but this will be the first designed for neurological and physical disabilities. The $250,000 upgrade was one of the key election commitments of Councillor Sutton, who has been working alongside the ‘Touched by Olivia Foundation’ to ensure the playground meets the highest standards.
